Creating and distributing videogames has become a lot easier in recent years with accessible development tools and internet speeds allowing indie studios or individuals to bring interesting concepts and mechanics to fruition. Such is the case with DREDGE, described by developers Black Salt Games as a fishing RPG with a sinister undercurrent, an amazing little title which features a simple gameplay loop and a ton of atmosphere.
Players explore an archipelago fishing for various sea-creatures and other relics while uncovering the mystery of the fog-covered islands and seascape. Gameplay revolves around gathering fish to sell for profit and upgrading your boat – which allows for more hold space, fishing gear and lighting to aid in traversing the seas at night – so more can be caught. The story will take you to new locations while searching for various items, and each location will present specific challenges to progress. While I suspect I may be close to completing the game, so not the longest experience, the atmosphere and stylish visuals have made it really enjoyable.
